Fall is officially coming! As Lash Artists, what do we dread most about FALL? Yes, that’s right, FALL SHEDDING! Today, we’re sharing why this happens and what you as a Lash Artist can do to keep your clients lashes lush and full! Educating your clients is important as they are experiencing more shedding than normal. WHAT IS LASH SHEDDING? Our lashes completely shed and regrow every 60–90 days, as lashes fall out in cycles. The shedding process is a healthy part of our hair-growth routine. On average, we lose up to 15% -20% of our natural lashes every two weeks and, depending on our individual hair-growth, we can shed between 1 and 5 natural eyelashes per day. The good thing is that right now you have new lashes growing in to replace the ones that are about to shed. WHY DOES FALL LASH SHEDDING HAPPEN? As the weather changes so do the temperatures and humidity. This change alters our lash growth cycle. It is similar to when animals shed seasonally. According to a study published in the journal Dermatology, “scientists followed more than 800 healthy women over six years and found that they lost the most hair in the autumn months. To understand why you need to know something about normal hair growth. Hair cells are the second-fastest produced cells in the body, so hair is often the first thing to suffer from any bodily changes. Hair is in a constant state of growth; 90% of our hair is growing, while the remainder is in a resting state (known as the telogen stage) before it falls out. The hair follicle itself then rests before the whole process is repeated. Researchers found that women had the highest proportion of resting hairs in July — with the telogen state in most of them ending around 100 days later, from October onwards. This pattern is thought to be evolutionary: the body holds on to the hair to protect the scalp against the summer’s midday sun”. WHAT IMPACT DOES LASH SHEDDING HAVE ON EYELASH EXTENSIONS? Lash shedding does not stop just because you have extensions. It’s important to educate your clients that for approximately two lash fills they will notice more shedding than they normally do. This means letting them know to expect poorer retention. All eyelashes will reach a certain length, shed out, then regrow, taking the extension along for the ride.
